“한국의 리듬을 모듬북에 담아 뿌리를 찾아가는 한인청소년들”
코리언 어메리컨 청소년 문화협회 (KAYCS: Korean American Youth Cultural Society)는
2016년 가을, 필라델피아 인근의 고등학생들을 중심으로 설립된 단체로 다양한 문화권이 공존하는 지역사회에 한국문화를 소개하고 서로의 문화를 공유하고 나누는 청년외교 사절단으로써의 역할을 감당하고 있는 청소년 단체이다.

지난해 3월 뉴욕의 플러싱 지역에 있는 KAYAC 포럼에 참가하여 공연한 것을 필두로 10월에는 필라델피아 매스터코랄과 벅스카운티 코랄소사이어티와의 한미 조인 연주회에서 함께 모듬북 공연을 펼쳐 미국 커뮤니티의 500여 관중으로부터 기립 박수를 받은바 있으며 또한 필라델피아 지역 주변의 여러 다른 이벤트에 여러번 참가하여 한국의 문화를 알리고 공유하는데 힘쓰고 있다. 최근에는 웨인 초등학교(Wayne Elementary, Wayne)의 인터네셔널 주간 코리안 나잇트 행사에 초대되어 모듬북 공연은 물론 초등학생들에게 한국 전통 게임도 소개하고 함께 즐기는 의미있는 시간을 가지기도 했다.
단원들은 모두 미국에서 태어난 2세들로 이지우 (Kristin Lee, Conestoga),
조 민지(Minjee Cho, The Episcopal Academy) , 조대연 (Scott Cho, Germantown Academy), 김정효 (Rachel Kim, West Chester East), 문희망(Daniel Mun, Methacton), 이지섭 (Caleb Lee, Lower Moreland), 이현우 (Ben Lee, Conestoga) , 조승연 (Matthew Cho, Germantown Academy) 등 총 여덟명이다. 모두 한국어 실력이 뛰어나고 K- Pop을 사랑하는 청소년들로, 모듬북을 배우며 뿌리를 찾아가고 모국에 대해 바로 알아감으로써 미국 사회 가운데 나아가 더욱 값진 나눔의 시간을 가지기 위해 노력하고 있다. 학생들을 지도하시는 차현진 (Hyun Jin Cha) 선생님은 필라,뉴욕, 뉴저지는 물론 세계적으로 활동하고 국악인이다.
코리언 어메리컨으로써 이중 정체성을 가지고 살아가는 2세들이 이 단체를 통해 더욱 성장하여 미주류 사회에서 빛나는 청소년들로 자리메김 해 나가길 기대한다. KAYCS는 앞으로 다양한 문화 홍보 프로그램을 계획하고 있으며 이런 의미있는 문화 활동에 관심있는 모든 청소년들에게 문을 열어두고 기다리고 있다.

The Korean American Youth Cultural Society (KAYCS) was founded in the fall of 2016 by high school students in the Philadelphia suburban area. These students founded KAYCS with the mission to introduce Korean culture to their communities and to share and embrace different cultural traditions.
KAYCS formed the Philly Youth Percussion Ensemble, as well, which has participated in several Korean drum performances. The members of this ensemble include Kristin Lee, Minjee Cho, Scott Cho, Rachel Kim, Daniel Mun, Caleb Lee, Ben Lee, and Matthew Cho. This group has performed in various concerts throughout the New York and Philadelphia area, such as the KAYAC Forum, the Two Cultures One Voice concert with the Philadelphia Master Chorale, and several other events. Recently, the members were invited to perform at Wayne Elementary School during their International Week, which focused on South Korea this year. In addition to proudly sharing their percussion performance, the ensemble members played traditional Korean games with the elementary school students. KAYCS will continue to reach out to their communities to educate and share their motherland’s culture. As Korean-Americans, KAYCS members embrace their bicultural identities and are alway delighted to share their traditions with everyone.
KAYCS is planning a variety of cultural outreach programs for the future and welcomes anyone who is interested in joining this deep-rooted cultural experience.
